I’m Mrs. Leah Obach and I’m proud to launch this podcast to showcase our students’ skills and ideas. I’ve been a teacher in Park West School Division since 2009. Currently, I work as the Literacy with ICT Teacher Leader, which basically means I’m a technology teacher. I work in schools around the division to support students and teachers with using technology. </span></p><span id="docs-internal-guid-6ce1f284-7fff-4c92-4aa0-0a0ac8b8bf98"><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">I believe that technology gives us the power to create and connect. I've taken a few great workshops about sketchnoting and I finally felt ready to try teaching a sketchnoting workshop for students this fall. Using what I've learned and some resources from educator <a href="https://virtualgiff.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Jen Giffen</a>, I offered an Introduction to Sketchnoting workshop for 3 different middle years classes who were taking part in Global Read Aloud. Sketchnoting offered these students a unique way of capturing their ideas about their Global Read Aloud book. <br /><br />Check out some of the sketchnotes students created. (Students have given permission to share their work.)</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghTIGe96Nf_NTHUXeiu85iokTBmfqHHS2QOG_nhIx4NmsQczuOGk-kOcmhmUDOd3in71VgFzt_KSyElnVnMRDS97AspWsNbG4VUUfDW4bEx7b66H2RukiJ8-jGHDv4p4ETM4OjHehD9n1siqWEtMbaPnOj-wRMmw96D862TrPIK1SfH47b6PjiIgh16t8/s2506/IMG_0098.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; The idea is that classrooms around the world read the same book on the same schedule and then make connections with partner classes in a different location to learn and share. I believe these connections are the most powerful part of the project!<br /><br />This year in Park West School Division, a number of classes participated in the Global Read Aloud and made connections in various ways. Our students have sent postcards digitally or on paper, made Padlet posts online to discuss the book, participated in video discussion on Flip and met online via video conferencing to talk about the books and learn about each other.<br /><br /><b>One class got to experience an extra-special connection this week!</b> <br /><br />Ms. Courchene’s Grade 5 class had the incredible opportunity connect with their Global Read Aloud partner classes in New York to meet author Jarrett Lerner online for a Q&A session!<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeMA0WOjWbIerzUwm2ReVpF5grK_QpOThxVqaAOq88ItJnr1o05P93hehnskSxMDOVhY0Xp39QzbGy8wjjSrbpUc1gVRGALz8aIyfM8pPDXf_XJm42lRWcDEovmmVs5oYJ787p3SgZkq5kGXJzrLq58NXDU0tM8B7Oa6SU2wocaG6cLUwaaq-vvUARnRQ/s3264/IMG_0127.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2448" data-original-width="3264" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeMA0WOjWbIerzUwm2ReVpF5grK_QpOThxVqaAOq88ItJnr1o05P93hehnskSxMDOVhY0Xp39QzbGy8wjjSrbpUc1gVRGALz8aIyfM8pPDXf_XJm42lRWcDEovmmVs5oYJ787p3SgZkq5kGXJzrLq58NXDU0tM8B7Oa6SU2wocaG6cLUwaaq-vvUARnRQ/s320/IMG_0127.JPG" width="320" /></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Stv9iFW-APRTB5IyKXffekc_kYiQYFPfiJiMG2gXuLrQJkOyedFRr_7T8tNPJ9wT8y8YtUOfJlphHLz0-NSRBcgEy5fGdK0gUfnJvxHMBknFmEfxU9eTgBxyDyT4FxYtzHvB03RK7UD1Ti_uYMGQCAGAgcY1jhEhyphenhyphenPkULYj71HgVbzUT-hNmZUXdgSY/s2227/IMG_0150.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1670" data-original-width="2227" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Stv9iFW-APRTB5IyKXffekc_kYiQYFPfiJiMG2gXuLrQJkOyedFRr_7T8tNPJ9wT8y8YtUOfJlphHLz0-NSRBcgEy5fGdK0gUfnJvxHMBknFmEfxU9eTgBxyDyT4FxYtzHvB03RK7UD1Ti_uYMGQCAGAgcY1jhEhyphenhyphenPkULYj71HgVbzUT-hNmZUXdgSY/s320/IMG_0150.JPG" width="320" /></a></div></div><div><br />The students in both locations read <a href="https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/A-Work-in-Progress/Jarrett-Lerner/9781665905152" target="_blank">A Work in Progress </a>by Jarrett Lerner and connected online via Padlet throughout the 6 weeks of the Global Read Aloud to discuss the book. We were so excited when our partners in New York asked if we'd like to join their video call with the author! <br /><br />The Grade 5s in each location created some great questions to find out more about the author and the process of creating the book. We had watched some of Jarrett Lerner's <a href="https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXZwPug3oC1NiOZcrCqsAZ5x0Slz5okzo&si=dknU0YpwyY67Vp9S" target="_blank">Behind the Scenes videos </a>about the book and used that information to revise and improve our questions. We wanted to ask questions that he hadn't already answered in his videos or on his blog. <br /><br />I am super proud of the thoughtful questions that the Grade 5s created! Students were brave about speaking up to ask the questions they'd planned and it was very interesting for all of us to hear Jarrett's answers. </div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbZLkUBNeZixqaafZj0y15dzcVqeXMFRvb2YCeMzMOvvhYDGnw8uxkRX2j7M4XbGebf2OyP_qhQNeGqVrmaFVz0ozTCItDbpIVM4Fo566KHHDg4LQ2zcm0sbs6YQ8-LU3xSmxL3TuOtzglOknLV0bSSHG1EC30fftxOfLpiJ3KwCTbIhv_X26zC1XMD9U/s3264/IMG_0151.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3264" data-original-width="2448" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbZLkUBNeZixqaafZj0y15dzcVqeXMFRvb2YCeMzMOvvhYDGnw8uxkRX2j7M4XbGebf2OyP_qhQNeGqVrmaFVz0ozTCItDbpIVM4Fo566KHHDg4LQ2zcm0sbs6YQ8-LU3xSmxL3TuOtzglOknLV0bSSHG1EC30fftxOfLpiJ3KwCTbIhv_X26zC1XMD9U/s320/IMG_0151.JPG" width="240" /></a><br /><br />To put in perspective what a unique opportunity this is: I’ve been participating in Global Read Aloud since 2014 (with my own class and then with other classes as a tech coach) and this is the first time I’ve ever had the chance to meet a GRA author! What a special experience! <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></div>Mrs Obachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18021887206376233441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4301023891463742885.post-43341104568011085112022-06-14T15:36:00.001-05:002022-06-14T15:37:00.326-05:00Exploring Canada's History with Minecraft Education Edition<br /><br /> I’ve been working with teachers & students at different schools in Park West School Division to explore Canada’s history with Minecraft EDU projects designed by <a href="#">The Cobblestone Collective. </a><br /><br /> We have really enjoyed this creative way of thinking about Canada’s past, learning about history and sharing what we know about our history!<br /><br />The Canada's History Crate from Cobblestone Collective (<a href="https://cobblestonecollective.ca/crates/mee/" target="_blank">available as a free download here)</a> includes suggested activities and video lessons guided by 2 teachers. Our learning activities included:<br /><br /><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Building a settlement in Minecraft</li><li>Building the Canadian Pacific Railway</li><li>Learning about Viola Desmond and her work to promote equity, inclusion and human rights</li><li>Adding an equitable and accessible theatre to our settlements in honour of Viola Desmond</li><li>Creating pixelated portraits to honour important Canadians from our past</li><li>Learning about Truth & Reconciliation in Canada</li><li>constructing a monument to honour the ongoing work of Truth & Reconciliation</li><li>Researching modern changemakers in Canada</li><li>Creating a non-player character to represent a modern changemaker that has made a difference in our country</li><li>Considering what skills and talents we have that could be used to impact Canada and make a difference</li><li>making a final improvement to our settlements that shows what we want to change in our local or global community</li></ul><br />Here are some pieces of student work that showcase some elements of this project. All student work is shared with permission.<div><br /></div><div>Take a tour of one group's project here: <br /><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="301" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2qEcd0DtFuo" width="445" youtube-src-id="2qEcd0DtFuo"></iframe></div><div><br /><div><br /></div><div>These screenshots show highlights of the settlement:</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVPvCiUkg8uq9NryyX2X_iISlBu7wD9-vevjcGjbRB3PocNr67k9NGcahtU_MzUHWiqTolrblfXoTeCcwAbNYq4R26LHUTqrzXAyo-6fTP3uuaiHL2LGLPCgeVVurPishgDMUNzxWy6ViwBDHdIWqbl3ta4jzgu1S8vklEbO6FMZTs4ZPob1HCp5_E/s960/2022%20SLS%20Cobblestone%20Collective%20Canada's%20History%20Minecraft%20Activity%20(3).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="540" data-original-width="960" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVPvCiUkg8uq9NryyX2X_iISlBu7wD9-vevjcGjbRB3PocNr67k9NGcahtU_MzUHWiqTolrblfXoTeCcwAbNYq4R26LHUTqrzXAyo-6fTP3uuaiHL2LGLPCgeVVurPishgDMUNzxWy6ViwBDHdIWqbl3ta4jzgu1S8vklEbO6FMZTs4ZPob1HCp5_E/w400-h225/2022%20SLS%20Cobblestone%20Collective%20Canada's%20History%20Minecraft%20Activity%20(3).jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi20LTzVgud6VOrf3IOL5le26tA5elbPW1PrjiCc4SpWlzgpWu36GlirKdSIaPMubw8RbgwMTjZDTfDmUuPBtKLXDAV_MTqQOokzQUgxXg0fUYco5r1M019L5e-Fn7m5b-QbJdTZdxWMbJnOzFeVMwzZkgMeLUKV6H3oqZcABJJklwVp2lLFPpqguQO/s960/2022%20SLS%20Cobblestone%20Collective%20Canada's%20History%20Minecraft%20Activity%20(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="540" data-original-width="960" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi20LTzVgud6VOrf3IOL5le26tA5elbPW1PrjiCc4SpWlzgpWu36GlirKdSIaPMubw8RbgwMTjZDTfDmUuPBtKLXDAV_MTqQOokzQUgxXg0fUYco5r1M019L5e-Fn7m5b-QbJdTZdxWMbJnOzFeVMwzZkgMeLUKV6H3oqZcABJJklwVp2lLFPpqguQO/w400-h225/2022%20SLS%20Cobblestone%20Collective%20Canada's%20History%20Minecraft%20Activity%20(2).jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-gYoytdO1YWquqc_uV443Iy7r1rHeotIL5Ij2iwgKXUcsLLyV0f-RWBpZLnVqV-8ulk7tRb9crqfNYCPBp27Pj1V_xJ9o2GFP_s08W1kmDSO981zEasbakQFvbOj82nHGYKUJkJ4norrhq0Q031XDldzhIY2pTNSB940EFBUeTfrssDOiqn-XD6Dm/s960/2022%20SLS%20Cobblestone%20Collective%20Canada's%20History%20Minecraft%20Activity%20(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="540" data-original-width="960" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-gYoytdO1YWquqc_uV443Iy7r1rHeotIL5Ij2iwgKXUcsLLyV0f-RWBpZLnVqV-8ulk7tRb9crqfNYCPBp27Pj1V_xJ9o2GFP_s08W1kmDSO981zEasbakQFvbOj82nHGYKUJkJ4norrhq0Q031XDldzhIY2pTNSB940EFBUeTfrssDOiqn-XD6Dm/w400-h225/2022%20SLS%20Cobblestone%20Collective%20Canada's%20History%20Minecraft%20Activity%20(1).jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /></div><div><br />These portraits were created by the HCI Grade 6 class. Emily Hunter invited me to co-plan a Minecraft EDU project for her Grade 3/4 class! She was working with the social studies theme of communities and the science unit focused on structures and materials, so we decided to focus on an interdisciplinary project that would target the outcomes from these units. Together, we planned a “build challenge” project that allowed her students to showcase their knowledge in both topics. Students worked individually or with a partner to create a community in Minecraft. </p><p>To show their understanding of curricular outcomes, students made plans for which biome they’d build in and how that environment would affect their community, students identified how their community would ensure residents basic human rights were met and constructed appropriate amenties based on this planning. Students also came up with laws/rules to be posted in their Minecraft communities and they determined which materials would be most effective for building their community structures (a link to their science outcomes). The Grade 3 and 4 students also demonstrated social studies skills from their curriculum through effective communication and collaboration, managing information and using critical and creative thinking skills. </p><p>Here is a snapshot of some of the planning students did before beginning their build challenges in Minecraft. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBdRwGhVKyD5j3k1tGEmwVsoWACgBXLXKWmA-jvHX0toByiB_TqIC-9TRSFhp_SrIfObG-FzkXlE6deCluiZktIXSBBqmK6TJTvhPUqhIBaqGDoUaBwtmwJz48k0Fj6dYAyXX85SImaiU0vibF3fXY1vIs_LE6kK4K-BpE5-hYnUrI6pnL4WfOTRNJ/s1104/MIN%203%204%20communities%20planning%20questions%201.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1038" data-original-width="1104" height="301" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBdRwGhVKyD5j3k1tGEmwVsoWACgBXLXKWmA-jvHX0toByiB_TqIC-9TRSFhp_SrIfObG-FzkXlE6deCluiZktIXSBBqmK6TJTvhPUqhIBaqGDoUaBwtmwJz48k0Fj6dYAyXX85SImaiU0vibF3fXY1vIs_LE6kK4K-BpE5-hYnUrI6pnL4WfOTRNJ/s320/MIN%203%204%20communities%20planning%20questions%201.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqCUmUb7oq94u4_OoCaNsFUItsb4Tc-dFL8INi84TCcbpVENYjtuqGH7BS6JLG5o8_M9LDEernxaXh-KwVE8H6oyzKPRdoD88hk7fAfItpFMyiIMDnA9ovZY0959eWHPy2n-IYtOrxXikiUBkgdmThgFe7G96JuQdH04PQl-z9KaVMOoPaSCEBi0Bp/s1104/MIN%203%204%20communities%20planning%20questions%202.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1038" data-original-width="1104" height="301" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqCUmUb7oq94u4_OoCaNsFUItsb4Tc-dFL8INi84TCcbpVENYjtuqGH7BS6JLG5o8_M9LDEernxaXh-KwVE8H6oyzKPRdoD88hk7fAfItpFMyiIMDnA9ovZY0959eWHPy2n-IYtOrxXikiUBkgdmThgFe7G96JuQdH04PQl-z9KaVMOoPaSCEBi0Bp/s320/MIN%203%204%20communities%20planning%20questions%202.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Once students had a plan, they were given time to build their communities in Minecraft. We started by reviewing some exemplars from other students and we co-constructed criteria for our own posters. We reviewed some key skills like changing page layout, adding text boxes, adding images, changing fonts/colours and changing backgrounds. Then, students used Google Slides with images from <a href="http://pixabay.com">pixabay.com</a> to create a poster that met the criteria. </p><p>To learn more about designing digital posters and see more student samples, <a href="https://mrsobachsclass.blogspot.com/2018/05/produce-to-show-understanding-designing.html" target="_blank">visit this blog post. </a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; I saved the idea and was excited when I had the chance to share it with my colleague Mrs. Howard. She was as excited as I was to try out this idea with her Kindergarten class.</p><p></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">What is story studio?</h3>The idea is for students to tell a story orally while using loose parts and classroom materials to "show" the story. The story is recorded to be shared.<p></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">How did we set up story studio?</h3><div>Mrs. Howard found a wonderful assortment of loose parts and classroom materials to put out for students. I modelled how to select materials from the options and then set up a scene (a playground with snow hills in my demo story). We talked about taking the supplies we need, but making sure there is enough for everyone. </div><div><br /></div><div>I modelled how I would practice telling my story out loud with a beginning, middle and ending. Then, we showed what it would look like for the video recording. I told my story and "acted it out" with my items and Mrs. Howard video recorded for me. <br /><br />After modelling, students were allowed to select their supplies and set up their story. We encouraged them to rehearse and let us know when they were ready to record their story. We roamed the room to record each student on video and then posted their videos into their Seesaw learning journal for families to see. </div><div><br /></div><div>Students were highly engaged in their play and stayed on task so well. Many of them were hoping to record more stories at the end of our allotted time, so that's always a great sign! It was awesome to see and hear students express their ideas. There was lots of originality --seldom did we find the same details in two stories!<br /><br /><h3 style="text-align: left;">What did it look like?</h3><div>Check out this video for a few clips of the story studio experience in Mrs. Howard's classroom:</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxCz1hqi0QnoL2cpqSSnD4tfgHGIzd6kPtn1A_RmFjQ6yGJhFq51m4MFfUEkunHCPJn7hL4_30IbXwJCcJghg' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><br /></div>Mrs Obachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18021887206376233441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4301023891463742885.post-41953272196562430692021-06-23T14:50:00.004-05:002021-06-29T15:18:26.485-05:00How We're Using Minecraft EDU in PWSD<p>I was so excited to learn that Minecraft Education Edition is now available on Chromebooks since that is the primary device our students use. I had several colleagues eager to try out Minecraft EDU with their students once it was set up for us this spring. It's been exciting to see what's possible with Minecraft in the classroom over the last few months. I wanted to document and share some of the ways that we've used it so far.</p><h2>Minecraft Water Cycle Representations</h2><div>Ms. Lee's Grade 8 class at BCI was studying the water cycle when we got access to Minecraft EDU. Ms. Lee decided to give her students the opportunity to work in small groups to demonstrate their knowledge of the water cycle by building a model of it in Minecraft. I was really impresssed with students' creativity as they developed their models, especially because many of the things they were representing had to be built out of alternate materials. For example, I saw some students creating clouds out of wool and invisible processes like evaporation or transpiration were shown through the use of glass panes in Minecraft. You can check out two tours of a Minecraft water cycle here: </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="339" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5xkn2GQhsGk" width="408" youtube-src-id="5xkn2GQhsGk"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="303" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SqatmftAb1g" width="364" youtube-src-id="SqatmftAb1g"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSQzLNBYmZ2iciHECFW69rBnMssRn0I1h_6OkxPKHS9bxgOsqGJBztWf4QyO0PVQGUNKSL2Z20_abTfba-J8hyphenhyphenHowVnAJrd3fw7z6GTkk0ZSGp41dKUvWleQpcVeWB3GJY0qio4qA9P2A/s1557/Water+cycle+examples.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1557" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSQzLNBYmZ2iciHECFW69rBnMssRn0I1h_6OkxPKHS9bxgOsqGJBztWf4QyO0PVQGUNKSL2Z20_abTfba-J8hyphenhyphenHowVnAJrd3fw7z6GTkk0ZSGp41dKUvWleQpcVeWB3GJY0qio4qA9P2A/w444-h308/Water+cycle+examples.png" width="444" /></a></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Manito Ahbee Aki Minecraft World: <br />Exploring Indigenous Culture and Manitoba's Past</h2><div>One of the frequent requests we had before Minecraft EDU became available for our school division was to explore the Manito Ahbee Aki world. This incredible Minecraft world was developed with Louis Riel School Division, a division right here in Manitoba. When this awesome project was shared in the news, many teachers were excited to experience this Anishinaabe world. </div><div><br /></div><div>The Manito Ahbee Aki world is meant for students to explore an area called The Forks (where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet here in Manitoba). This world takes us back in time to learn about traditional ways of living on the land. Students learn from Knowledge Keepers, explore petroforms (rock formations), gather supplies and craft necessary tools, go on a bison hunt and trade for seeds to start their own garden. I've supported several classes in getting started with the experience and it's been interesting and educational for each group I've worked with. So far, we've tried in it Grades 4-8. <br /><br />Find the world and lesson details here: <a href="https://education.minecraft.net/en-us/lessons/manito-ahbee-aki">https://education.minecraft.net/en-us/lessons/manito-ahbee-aki</a></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB9PeR1xXeeCzwb5hGv8sXfPT5GlJrMVn1ByPLPZcun-U5fEARnzIHD9PojvSQGkrbCynATGnD_VIweYMoRZY-IJOAs_RP6o_FaPDTzLwPs4uZQXC8hojRqKw545QhUhKOuvaxKYMF5CY/s1557/Minecraft+Manito+Ahbee+Aki.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1557" height="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB9PeR1xXeeCzwb5hGv8sXfPT5GlJrMVn1ByPLPZcun-U5fEARnzIHD9PojvSQGkrbCynATGnD_VIweYMoRZY-IJOAs_RP6o_FaPDTzLwPs4uZQXC8hojRqKw545QhUhKOuvaxKYMF5CY/w408-h283/Minecraft+Manito+Ahbee+Aki.png" width="408" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Q3r_48XAF_Y" width="433" youtube-src-id="Q3r_48XAF_Y"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><h2 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Pixelated Portraits</h2>Mrs. Shwaluk's Grade 8s created these cool portraits in their art class. They created a grid over a headshot of themselves, then they chose resources in MinecraftEDU to create a pixelated image of themselves. Mrs. Shwaluk said her students really enjoyed the project and, although she thought it might take a long time to build these, many students completed their portraits in about 30 minutes. A great way to showcase student work is to create a digital book. We've
been using Book Creator in Park West School Division and our students have
created some wonderful pieces of work to showcase their writing! Here
are a few examples of digital books students have created this year:<br /><br />
</p>
<h2 style="text-align: left;">I Wonder...</h2>
<p></p>
<p>
Mrs. Smart's Grade 4 class created I Wonder books. They developed 4 I
wonder questions about an animal they were curious about, then researched the
animal to answer their questions and published a question and answer book with
the details they learned.
</p>
<h2 style="text-align: left;">A to Zed</h2><div>Mrs. Gorrell's Grade 2 class was inpsired by a Canadian A-Z book that listed different Canadian items for each letter of the alphabet. They decided to create their own version with an Canadian word for each letter of the alphabet.</div><div><br /></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Personal Interest</h2><div>Mrs. Smart's Grade 4s also wrote about one of their personal interests: whether they loved animals or Minecraft, vehicles or sports, students shared about what they love in these books. </div><div><br /></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Student Work Showcase</h2><div>With permission, the following students have shared their work. Check out this <a href="https://read.bookcreator.com/library/-Ma-CVa4E0FsnEgnHer1" target="_blank">Book Creator library</a> for examples of the wonderful work our students have done! </div><div><br /></div>

They've agreed to let me share their recent science design project to show how technology was integrated. </p><p></p><h3 style="text-align: left;"><b>The project</b></h3>As part of their science class, students were challenged to design a cooler to keep ice frozen as long as possible. They were responsible for documenting the design process and collecting data. <p></p><p></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">The technology</h3><div>Students used different tech tools to enhance their design project and the presentation of the data. <br /><br /><b>Hyperdocs with Google Slides</b>: Students created a hyperdoc in Slides which included each step of the design process, including details on the materials, planning, results and conclusion. Students added links to research sources, Sheets used for data collection and videos of their initial build and re-iteration to make improvements. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>Google Sheets: </b>Students collected their temperature data in a table in Google Sheets, which was used to create the graphs they included in their final hyperdoc. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi497goTQ38LAosqhmBHNvM1Kjxhe79cTtJ8JyYETbINnNU688Tk7zHA2oS5rk7VVSlCR9s9s4v9nq9FMW9eGr7ArNOToUVP45pImRUakUp3jw4CG980PyJCx2rEp9N8Kl85uvUZnoH1G4/s960/Copy+of++Reese%2527s+Cooler+Hyperdoc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="540" data-original-width="960" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi497goTQ38LAosqhmBHNvM1Kjxhe79cTtJ8JyYETbINnNU688Tk7zHA2oS5rk7VVSlCR9s9s4v9nq9FMW9eGr7ArNOToUVP45pImRUakUp3jw4CG980PyJCx2rEp9N8Kl85uvUZnoH1G4/w400-h225/Copy+of++Reese%2527s+Cooler+Hyperdoc.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div><b>WeVideo</b>: Students used WeVideo to record and edit their videos, which showed them building their coolers and then revising them based on initial testing. </div><p><b>Micro:bits: </b>Students programmed micro:bits to take temperature measurements as a way of collecting data while testing their coolers. </p><h3 style="text-align: left;">The projects</h3><div>I was so excited to see this student work when Mrs. Shwaluk shared it with our professional learning community! It is such a wonderful example of how we can use technology to enhance learning and the students did a great job of demonstrating their understanding through their videos and hyperdocs. Thank you to this group for allowing me to showcase their work here on the blog.</i></p><br /><b>About our Research Project</b><br /><br />These fantastic WeVideo creations were created in our grade 8 Optics and Light unit. All of these research projects were to show that light and wavelengths have energy that can be used in all kinds of applications. We all picked a topic to research, did the research, created a script for the narration, recorded and edited video, uploaded it on YouTube, and made a QR code for it so that people can access it. <p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; white-space: pre;">

The Herd's Point of View Episode 1 was released May 8th and I'm really proud of the work these students have done for this project! Miss Payne invited me to her ELA class to help out with this project and I was so glad to be involved. I witnessed some awesome teamwork as this class planned, created and promoted their podcast. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcUpgE9SQTLfXUYI7Wzq6nEbZ4HnyRkP_xNfgTKEtIJeO315pwM2DWYEoc11Ep7ivwV0EL8koAsvcVmp3dLubM0J7aPU_tXQkJGgif346Z-QurO7o2_4y38QlZiBiMgUD1iIQ2bk202XY/s1080/The+Herds+P+O+V+%25281%2529.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcUpgE9SQTLfXUYI7Wzq6nEbZ4HnyRkP_xNfgTKEtIJeO315pwM2DWYEoc11Ep7ivwV0EL8koAsvcVmp3dLubM0J7aPU_tXQkJGgif346Z-QurO7o2_4y38QlZiBiMgUD1iIQ2bk202XY/s320/The+Herds+P+O+V+%25281%2529.png" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">You can listen to their episode <a href="https://anchor.fm/amanda-payne7/episodes/Things-Parents-Dont-Understand-e10eck9" target="_blank">"Things Parents Don't Understand"</a> which is all about sleep. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Episode summary: <i>We discussed one of the issues we feel our parents don’t understand, why teenagers need to sleep in on the weekends. Seesaw is a great tool to use for collecting student work samples in a digital portfolio (or learning journal, as Seesaw calls it). Teachers can also create or source activities for students to complete in Seesaw, which was super helpful during remote learning and continues to be useful for classroom learning activities. </p><p>I've found some good Seesaw scavenger hunt activities created by other teachers and now created some of my own templates to share with colleagues as well. The concept of a scavenger hunt works well for any grade level and subject area because you can customize your list of scavenger hunt items to whatever skills or knowledge your students are working on. </p><p>I like that these Scavenger Hunt activities allow students to apply their skills and knowledge by finding examples of the concepts they've been working with. I also like that there are many ways for students to show their examples: they could take a picture, write with the pens, type their response or even take a video. </p><p></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Examples of Seesaw Scavenger Hunts:</h3>click the links to find these activities and creators on Seesaw<div><br /></div><div><a href="https://app.seesaw.me/pages/shared_activity?share_token=EX7n958jROSMO1jqgzo-Wg&prompt_id=prompt.f2594d28-ca0a-499a-831b-3f592da9b7cd" target="_blank">Math Scavenger Hunt </a><br />by Leah Obach</div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://app.seesaw.me/pages/shared_activity?share_token=EX7n958jROSMO1jqgzo-Wg&prompt_id=prompt.f2594d28-ca0a-499a-831b-3f592da9b7cd" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="434" data-original-width="891" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDAot5VTMXfCIbwP57rO8ymaOf1lHveZiZym60uGbbyNFGG5gI4LJstRC_7n8aAFEfMSMEh4YqM8QiaMV-kyyZJg6NqJSYQDAaJ38dWWsmBVAfdl4S4xBTeG0X27c__6Rnl9zzQefIrvw/w640-h312/math+scavenger+hunt.png" width="640" /></a></div></div><div><br /><div><p></p><p><a href="https://app.seesaw.me/pages/shared_activity?share_token=txUXygamTNWGSCmgSKMWCg&prompt_id=prompt.f7291315-97c6-41bb-8b9b-3ea8104117d4">3D Shapes Scavenger Hunt Activity</a><br />by <a href="https://app.seesaw.me/#/activities/library?profile=pub.person.46084210-aaf7-4d91-bb5a-4839b180cea6" target="_blank">Kirsten Lofton</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://app.seesaw.me/pages/shared_activity?share_token=txUXygamTNWGSCmgSKMWCg&prompt_id=prompt.f7291315-97c6-41bb-8b9b-3ea8104117d4" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="441" data-original-width="930" height="304" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioTnph-VeOLIk_JdwGxTbgvTuBVJ38hCQ3MPWTetrOKzBGhaHA1LUDgDuK1a5-VxRqzFj4yZPTOcGGMnek3qufmcBADY_wULvsh2ByGQgwnqgqzsNzzoK_18CYUDMeMs2HHOmjeoD-eRQ/w640-h304/Screenshot+2021-03-16+at+2.22.18+PM.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><a href="https://app.seesaw.me/pages/shared_activity?share_token=qFi6wymkTwWq9Nq3fW76lQ&prompt_id=prompt.6ff39101-d579-4220-b0ff-5c563df1cd2f" target="_blank">Text Features Scavenger Hunt</a><br />by <a href="https://app.seesaw.me/#/activities/library?profile=pub.person.28eade46-181e-4179-b907-884af427b0a7" target="_blank">Mary Klempke </a><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPgo_tSbrIsibBKrp9smZTVd8ZL9tcnbKZqVlBQeeCI7_k5wbRnSMMqVq-5Acc3Cvp0awVkMECBocXMreaJLMKdFg2QRXWr8p_OEktNZyJIsRBbtjFwomZhqcKzTO6N3JBVdEb-2ZIvUw/s597/Screenshot+2021-03-16+at+2.21.45+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="411" data-original-width="597" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPgo_tSbrIsibBKrp9smZTVd8ZL9tcnbKZqVlBQeeCI7_k5wbRnSMMqVq-5Acc3Cvp0awVkMECBocXMreaJLMKdFg2QRXWr8p_OEktNZyJIsRBbtjFwomZhqcKzTO6N3JBVdEb-2ZIvUw/s16000/Screenshot+2021-03-16+at+2.21.45+PM.png" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://app.seesaw.me/#/activities/library?my_library&query=color&promptId=prompt.62416a27-733a-4bdf-ba59-b16fb889ee0e" target="_blank">Colour Scavenger Hunt</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">by <a href="https://app.seesaw.me/#/activities/library?profile=pub.person.c7ca79df-b57a-451e-a0e5-87eb33b1ffc0" target="_blank">Ronit Shapiro</a><br /><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://app.seesaw.me/#/activities/library?my_library&query=color&promptId=prompt.62416a27-733a-4bdf-ba59-b16fb889ee0e" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="371" data-original-width="987" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9Mx4ibeUKVdAhwDkp0TyMvF0LqUCfk4bCiyShfh_DYGRd3gdT75N5qL6a0UHP6YYICutoueT2Tj1nyCqjEpyhETnZyR-JUe8gQZ4xXFTAjszLRYCc8EpRE60ETcuSoK9XQ2QECzZbwZ8/w640-h240/Screenshot+2021-03-16+at+2.20.53+PM.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /></div><br /><br /><br /><br /><h3 style="text-align: left;">Seesaw Templates for Creating a Scavenger Hunt</h3><br />I like to keep a template that I can copy and edit in Seesaw to make new scavenger hunts for different grade levels or subjects. The Grade 7 & 8 class at Decker School just released a book called "Inside the Mailbox". The book was written and illustrated by this talented group of students over the past several weeks. It began back in January when we read "The Day the Crayons Quit" by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB3VblWGFMRtbSRysEDEEB_hAJhyphenhyphen39ROvZKIAJLAv5F0u0EpzZCmWd4wWRqO-QQysKjfpST-4LuUtRWfz7UDhiAms3ZhG6mwlC6bO0t02JYsWapl2EYJusvUERMtI2f5Icz-YgfptR3s0/s560/Blog+Header+Inside+the+Mailbox.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB3VblWGFMRtbSRysEDEEB_hAJhyphenhyphen39ROvZKIAJLAv5F0u0EpzZCmWd4wWRqO-QQysKjfpST-4LuUtRWfz7UDhiAms3ZhG6mwlC6bO0t02JYsWapl2EYJusvUERMtI2f5Icz-YgfptR3s0/w640-h360/Blog+Header+Inside+the+Mailbox.png" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p><p>I was inspired to share this book with students and teachers after seeing <a href="https://msmclauchlan.com/2020/04/23/msmclauchlanwrites-episode-4-the-day-the-crayons-quit/" target="_blank">Ms. McLauchlan's suggestion </a>for using it as a writing prompt. The read aloud definitely sparked a wonderful writing project in this case. Students brainstormed different possessions that might have complaints and then narrowed it down to the four "characters" for their book. Their teacher, Elias Wipf, supported them with the writing process as they drafted and revised letters from the perspective of each possession. Each student wrote 4 letters from their selected item. They also drew incredible illustrations to match. The letters and illustrations were put together using Mixbook.com, which is a tool designed for digital scrapbooking, but allowed for the students to have a digital book that could be professionally printed. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWbk05b22JAqUsTGuwsrmT1mXYadNzSdsWeX9cdduXoBSMqX3eM-Liw-WBxRfyxEVTn5zMoUs_RKe-lKwmFFQKMc57d9OMmHdr7TnfBM7ceNVvraqpl9T5Z_vvEivlsqQjdsrCH8K0gsg/s560/book+pages+1.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" height="362" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWbk05b22JAqUsTGuwsrmT1mXYadNzSdsWeX9cdduXoBSMqX3eM-Liw-WBxRfyxEVTn5zMoUs_RKe-lKwmFFQKMc57d9OMmHdr7TnfBM7ceNVvraqpl9T5Z_vvEivlsqQjdsrCH8K0gsg/w640-h362/book+pages+1.png" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>I visited the student-authors this week and was thrilled to see this incredible book they've created together! I've also tried it out with a few classes and found it to be an engaging writing activity with some great options for infusing technology. If you want to try this out, use the link to Landis & Highfill's hyperdoc above to get started! </p><p>When I shared this activity in classrooms, we began by viewing a moving video called "<a href="https://youtu.be/KSeZm256jg8">The Conditioned"</a> which is about a man named Raimundo and his life. I've watched it several times now and it's super powerful every time. </p><p>Students were then tasked with developing a six-word memoir to describe Raimundo's life. Some of our Park West School Division students posted their completed memoirs to Padlet, so you can see samples below:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqdZX3L19ysbrFb1dDqshv-Xm5aLV254TngY3hjQcZHC8GOjOU_0xFo-Ho6_4okZD43y_huOLtmVemvN7-u1Av8v4cI25eKT6_zfuBK7ZAmJum_t6tAO9Y1UDTPDn9WpgywPZ2d9tJAO4/s1970/6+word+memoir+Padlet+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1970" data-original-width="518" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqdZX3L19ysbrFb1dDqshv-Xm5aLV254TngY3hjQcZHC8GOjOU_0xFo-Ho6_4okZD43y_huOLtmVemvN7-u1Av8v4cI25eKT6_zfuBK7ZAmJum_t6tAO9Y1UDTPDn9WpgywPZ2d9tJAO4/s16000/6+word+memoir+Padlet+1.png" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Next, students thought about their own lives and wrote six word memoirs for themselves. This was a bit more challenging, but students came up with some excellent memoirs to highlight their lives. Once they'd chosen their six words, students designed a digital poster to share their memoirs. Some classes used Google Slides to put together their images and text and other classes used <a href="https://www.canva.com/">Canva</a> to design their digital posters. They turned out to be beautiful pieces of work and several students agreed to let me share their memoirs. You can see some student samples below, courtesy of Mr. Baskerville's Grade 6 class and Mrs. Bowley's Grade 6/7 class. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Their wining video, <i>Cookies for Tanzania</i>, tells the story of how their school has been supporting projects in Tanzania through their fundraising efforts over the past few years. This contest was created to encourage young people to "tell stories of people serving their communities" through video creation. </p><p>The Cookies for Tanzania fundraiser sales were put on hold this year due to COVID, but this group of students found a way to continue contributing to the cause by raising awareness with their video. Four students collaboratively planned and created the video, including sourcing images, writing a script and narrating the video to tell their story. They also worked with students, parents and community members to obtain the permissions required for people appearing in the video. The resulting video is a great showcase for this service learning project -- be sure to watch it below!</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="392" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NBuLrOrLiZA" width="472" youtube-src-id="NBuLrOrLiZA"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The video is now featured in the <a href="https://www.nextvista.org/cookies-for-tanzania/" target="_blank">Next Vista for Learning video library</a>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Congratulations to Matt, Gabe, Jesse and Abby on a job well done and to Elias for supporting his students in their video production project!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoWHGVQVNavTWTuSPJj6jWG_FUZm8lWdC7q-6sO9P84uWo_7juXo3II-LSgNMxssNXSz0zoSYRf3vB9HPamgNpjoHd9XwqR0HCGV_55rZrPIoQlfFFa5jdquHmPJgMm5YyL7yrkZnm2vc/s506/DCS+Next+Vista+video+contest+certificate+image.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="506" data-original-width="395" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoWHGVQVNavTWTuSPJj6jWG_FUZm8lWdC7q-6sO9P84uWo_7juXo3II-LSgNMxssNXSz0zoSYRf3vB9HPamgNpjoHd9XwqR0HCGV_55rZrPIoQlfFFa5jdquHmPJgMm5YyL7yrkZnm2vc/w313-h400/DCS+Next+Vista+video+contest+certificate+image.png" width="313" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Mrs Obachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18021887206376233441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4301023891463742885.post-67722582919840706192020-11-19T14:45:00.009-06:002021-01-08T15:05:33.534-06:00Global Read Aloud 2020: Student-hosted Twitter Chats <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ3NzzJCI3amCp2tNavKuwZks9pxY5BIRh_KsbIsN-WHx89AC9xQ5GpPFiByIfcXjc8maZZ8K7h2ulxy_JJTqUhpyIqWG21NAieo1aijddjLJ_NrW_e3VSuit9k6yqvDCa9WX8VUcsc1U/s1600/info+Omar+Global+Read+Aloud+2020+Twitter+Chats.png" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ3NzzJCI3amCp2tNavKuwZks9pxY5BIRh_KsbIsN-WHx89AC9xQ5GpPFiByIfcXjc8maZZ8K7h2ulxy_JJTqUhpyIqWG21NAieo1aijddjLJ_NrW_e3VSuit9k6yqvDCa9WX8VUcsc1U/s320/info+Omar+Global+Read+Aloud+2020+Twitter+Chats.png" width="320" /></a></p><div style="text-align: center;"> For Global Read Aloud this fall, I had the pleasure of working with staff and students at Miniota School to host Twitter Chat discussions about their books. Mrs. Tynelle Graham's Grade 3/4 class hosted two chats about Planet Omar: Accidental Trouble Magnet. Ms. Stacy Paull's Grade 5/6 class hosted a chat discussing Indian No More. Mrs. Tricia Lelond's Grade 7/8 class hosted a Twitter Chat for Prairie Lotus.</div><p></p><p><b><br /></b></p><p><b>Before the Chat</b><br />I met with each class for a planning session prior to the date of the live chat. Each group of students brainstormed discussion questions and then narrowed it down to a rich question set for the Twitter chat. The question prep led to lots of great discussion before the "official chat" even began. The Grades 5-8 students used a Canva template I'd created to prepare the graphics for each question. We Tweeted out the question graphics ahead of time for any classes wanting to prepare answers before the live discussion and shared the details for our chat in hopes that lots of other teachers and classrooms would join in.</p><p>Students also prepared their own answers to the questions for the chat, so they'd be well-prepared to participate in the discussion and share their ideas. Some students wrote their answers on sticky notes to be photographed and Tweeted during the chat and some (older) students typed their answers in a Google Doc to be copied into a Tweet during the chat. </p><p>On the day of the chat, each class developed a schedule for posting questions within their one hour live chat time. Each class designated a couple of students to Tweet out the questions at the scheduled times...and they were very precise about following their planned schedule! </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi58_YewvRTflRABj_S4VrQGR3Kmmb7g7kiMEiNTAmqTbRw4vitdn7mpD5qxlEKe1SHIq1awQqrbWHxWY-mA8f-rAuO4zhIUVU34mImX3ejsREnzv2EufT-sJcVhOoWTnNqtUpLoRf2SjI/s1600/2.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi58_YewvRTflRABj_S4VrQGR3Kmmb7g7kiMEiNTAmqTbRw4vitdn7mpD5qxlEKe1SHIq1awQqrbWHxWY-mA8f-rAuO4zhIUVU34mImX3ejsREnzv2EufT-sJcVhOoWTnNqtUpLoRf2SjI/s320/2.png" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZyyRA4e3HnXeeUHRhZm5cWkJFRtsYQtb0KbNvezzbPgYriuL-ZWHimQHvN1u5PqjwLbBZaJWxSlnltwqOZuOIh4nKECni3cAdPVv-6o5sqFlsL6tLR6jz00Lp9N4qF1oHbRiC1C2ZptE/s1600/Q2+Omar+Global+Read+Aloud+2020+Twitter+Chats.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZyyRA4e3HnXeeUHRhZm5cWkJFRtsYQtb0KbNvezzbPgYriuL-ZWHimQHvN1u5PqjwLbBZaJWxSlnltwqOZuOIh4nKECni3cAdPVv-6o5sqFlsL6tLR6jz00Lp9N4qF1oHbRiC1C2ZptE/s320/Q2+Omar+Global+Read+Aloud+2020+Twitter+Chats.png" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMgDnxmiYG9ISib03VgjQYN1i_JUSo-IMy5YhGPZSqAjKP-6MhhkRRF-BWBgLQs0rbGosJ2_Yk4WpxdP9FMz834xVxiYLVliDh9TN2pZVv30Zd_y342lVRTUEH9Y3wqlTQKRXrgGIAkx0/s1600/1.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMgDnxmiYG9ISib03VgjQYN1i_JUSo-IMy5YhGPZSqAjKP-6MhhkRRF-BWBgLQs0rbGosJ2_Yk4WpxdP9FMz834xVxiYLVliDh9TN2pZVv30Zd_y342lVRTUEH9Y3wqlTQKRXrgGIAkx0/s320/1.png" width="320" /></a></div><p><b>During the Twitter Chat<br /></b>During the live chat time, students had a few roles:</p><p>(1) Designated students posted the question graphics at the planned times with question numbers and a reminder to use the chat hashtag.</p><p>(2) All students posted their own responses to the questions. Students answered 1-3 of the questions and the class made sure someone contributed their ideas to the chat for every question. The teacher in each room used TweetDeck to follow the chat hashtag and projected their screen so all students could see the Tweets coming in. Classes composed their responses together, with the teacher typing and sending Tweets that they could all view.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipLjzTcUexdr4WTGyaGcBp6Lzh-ZZ-_YHQVOA06m4VTV7X7kJDGD9xTQDp4hpLUcpLOUt-9NWNlf9VPMRolK7gaeaGSa4PWiz1tYFjTFyU8y8RIHeIj5OwsJnhFuoImf1QA_88-K-KYbo/s601/2020+GRA+Omar+Twitter+chat+screenshot.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="482" data-original-width="601" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipLjzTcUexdr4WTGyaGcBp6Lzh-ZZ-_YHQVOA06m4VTV7X7kJDGD9xTQDp4hpLUcpLOUt-9NWNlf9VPMRolK7gaeaGSa4PWiz1tYFjTFyU8y8RIHeIj5OwsJnhFuoImf1QA_88-K-KYbo/s320/2020+GRA+Omar+Twitter+chat+screenshot.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga4HsZlWLJzY5hUdgg3iymSOPS2PPgvdWnd8eBaLYo5cgrxNJ8e_WI1wYnHpPy5mx3_Xe89QK3dFNcLMIYl-r8NZPF4BJQdynbs_Y_AzrG5vXVE7W88WyDLAFTs0PaHkoVjOrcjzbfbd8/s588/GRA+Prairie+Twitter+chat+screenshot.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="498" data-original-width="588" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga4HsZlWLJzY5hUdgg3iymSOPS2PPgvdWnd8eBaLYo5cgrxNJ8e_WI1wYnHpPy5mx3_Xe89QK3dFNcLMIYl-r8NZPF4BJQdynbs_Y_AzrG5vXVE7W88WyDLAFTs0PaHkoVjOrcjzbfbd8/s320/GRA+Prairie+Twitter+chat+screenshot.png" width="320" /></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh_SnwWKlP96f32r68BI_Akgn-HNhhv6GRaPxrHNS9YG0-mKt6KsND46TcXIcqLDjby0eZshXxUYC2WAHxtB_Rw_IyavOXRbFg-qakSJUhyphenhyphen43gZpP9mSamDstCWH2zEZZijpUrxhJHcLo/s607/GRA+INM+Twitter+chat+screenshot.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="477" data-original-width="607" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh_SnwWKlP96f32r68BI_Akgn-HNhhv6GRaPxrHNS9YG0-mKt6KsND46TcXIcqLDjby0eZshXxUYC2WAHxtB_Rw_IyavOXRbFg-qakSJUhyphenhyphen43gZpP9mSamDstCWH2zEZZijpUrxhJHcLo/s320/GRA+INM+Twitter+chat+screenshot.png" width="320" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p><b>After the Chat</b></p><p>Tweets continued to come in after the live chat time, so classes continued to moderate and respond to messages on Twitter. </p><p>It was a lot of fun to be involved with these student-hosted Twitter Chats. It's exciting to be back, but also a very different back to school experienc given that we are teaching and learning during a pandemic. This school year, I'll continue to serve as the Literacy with ICT Teacher Leader for Park West School Division. In this role, I support students and teachers in using technology for education. It's an awesome job and I'm very excited to be back at school!</p><p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="back to school" height="254" src="https://sdk.bitmoji.com/render/panel/25adabab-67ad-4d79-ac47-1b9498347431-3ddde865-54c4-45f5-85d6-1ad2ea52278b-v1.png?transparent=1&palette=1" width="254" /></p><p>Our school division is currently using G Suite for Education. I wanted to share a couple of tips for quick communication using Gmail and Google Classroom.</p><p><b>(1) Use labels for your email contacts to make it quick and easy to email a group of parents, students or colleagues.</b></p><p>For example, I might create a label called "Parents 2020-2021". I can label all contacts for parents & guardians of that class. Then, when I go to compose an email, I simply type the label name "Parents 2020-2021" into the TO or BCC field of my email to message all parents at once. </p><p><b>Note: When you are emailing a group, using the BCC field to send a blind carbon copy is good email etiquette so that you are not sharing contact information with others. The BCC field prevents other recipients from seeing email addresses that the message is being sent to. </b></p><p><a href="https://support.google.com/contacts/answer/30970?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform=Desktop" target="_blank">The instructions for using labels are here </a></p><p><b>(2) If you are using Google Classroom, you can quickly email students and guardians from the "People" tab. </b></p><p>Once you have invited students to Google Classroom, you can easily contact individual students, multiple students on your class list or your entire class. Similarly, once guardians have signed up with their student, you can also email them using the list in Google Classroom. </p><p><a href="https://support.google.com/edu/classroom/answer/6025210?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en" target="_blank">The instructions for emailing students, guardians and co-teachers in Google Classroom are here. </a></p><p><br /></p>Mrs Obachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18021887206376233441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4301023891463742885.post-57301811056778409332020-03-11T09:00:00.000-05:002020-03-11T09:00:00.766-05:00Book Trailers released by Rossburn Elementary School Grade 5/6Along with some other classes from around PWSD, the Rossburn Elementary School Grade 5/6 class has joined me in creating book trailers for some of their favourite books this year! Similar to the process we've used with other classes taking part in this project, this group of students viewed sample book trailers, set criteria, made a plan for their video and then started designing with <a href="https://www.powtoon.com/" target="_blank">Powtoon</a>.<br />

The latest book trailer releases come to us from the Decker Colony School Grades 7 & 9 class. This group of students began by planning their trailers with a graphic organizer. We viewed some sample book trailers (both professionally-created and student-created) and set criteria for their work. Next, students had an overview tutorial of <a href="https://www.wevideo.com/" target="_blank">WeVideo</a>. We reviewed the basics of how to use this video creation tool, which we are currently accessing as part of our <a href="https://edwin.nelson.com/" target="_blank">Edwin</a> pilot. Students eagerly got started with this video creation project. <br />
<br />
When I returned to visit this classroom last week, it was evident that students had worked diligently to create book trailers which convey the mood and message of their chosen novels. I was impressed by their video design skills, including their choice of music, images and fonts to enhance their trailers. These book trailers sure do the job of hooking a viewer - I want to read them all now that I've watched these!<br />

Booksnaps are a fun way for students to show their thinking about a text. Students explore their response to the text and demonstrate understanding when choosing symbols and a caption that reflect their ideas about the selected section. <br />
<br />
For this class, students began by reading their choice novels with instructions from their teacher to flag something significant with a sticky note. The class discussed that a significant passage could be something important to the plot or something that caused a reaction from them. Once students had some time to read, we introduced the concept of booksnaps by presenting a few samples (student-created and teacher-created examples). Through examining samples, we set criteria for their work. Then, it was time to get snapping!<br />
<br />
Students returned to the passage they had flagged as significant or read on to find an appropriate section to "snap". This group of students primarily used <a href="https://www.snapchat.com/" target="_blank">SnapChat </a>to create their booksnaps. (PicCollage, SeeSaw, Google Slides and other tools also work well for creating them.) Once they had a picture of a page in their book, students added their annotation, emojis and the title and author of the text. When their booksnaps were complete, they downloaded their snaps (rather than sending them to one of their contacts). Then, students submitted their work to their teacher via Google Classroom. Their finished products were very well done!<br />

It was held at a local school and organized by a group of Grade 7 students. This talented crew of students featured important activists with various exhibits around the school library. Not only did they research the activists and develop the displays, they also posed as the "wax statues" of the people they'd researched. I was so impressed with this project and was excited when the class gave me permission to write about their work! I've shared the details of this project from my perspective in hopes that some other students and teachers might be inspired to try a project like this.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRUSH6Z02itqc49uasMl63jXrFVWxZhpfd8Lf-kgiozIigoOz5hTlcc9tGrWDYh9e-IjVaP8TbEjPBQatjxjjTflLS-KpmH6QftMWyMKAdP2ulW3hLV9EqFWrQlRnqgEZOU4tBsfBe7YA/s1600/IMG_3198.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRUSH6Z02itqc49uasMl63jXrFVWxZhpfd8Lf-kgiozIigoOz5hTlcc9tGrWDYh9e-IjVaP8TbEjPBQatjxjjTflLS-KpmH6QftMWyMKAdP2ulW3hLV9EqFWrQlRnqgEZOU4tBsfBe7YA/s400/IMG_3198.JPG" width="300" /></a>Each student in Mrs. Bowley's class selected an activist to focus on for the project. I saw displays on Rosa Parks, Desmond Tutu, Cesar Chavez, Craig Keilburger, Malcolm X, Viola Desmond, Agnes Macphail and more. Students researched the significant life events and important contributions of their activist. Students created an audio recording explaining important information about their activist. They used first person narrative to share the facts they'd uncovered through their research in a unique and engaging way. Students used the <a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/audio-editor-music-editor/dfmpaemifkgbnlgcccccnfjjkeiikeie" target="_blank">Audio editor & music editor AudioStudio Chrome extension</a> to record on their Chromebooks. Many students sourced royalty-free background music to enhance their audio.<br />
<br />
Each student created a poster for their display, which included some key details about the activist, along with a QR code linking to their recording. This format allowed museum visitors to view each display while listening to the audio on their phone or personal device. As guests moved through the exhibit, students posed as their activist, wearing costumes selected from the local Value Shoppe. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbXSmTC1YUdZeaUuiRbcXOoFEPFt-IIXwedKhv9cKan5Gvqcksr2sVGB130ASaydDBJ9rZ22lTnf6Wib0-Yw1WiTS_YEpqU6yHq5YUd9XIANJer3AcOyglZ6RHE7yxhDJxCJY9-T5H5j8/s1600/IMG_3199.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbXSmTC1YUdZeaUuiRbcXOoFEPFt-IIXwedKhv9cKan5Gvqcksr2sVGB130ASaydDBJ9rZ22lTnf6Wib0-Yw1WiTS_YEpqU6yHq5YUd9XIANJer3AcOyglZ6RHE7yxhDJxCJY9-T5H5j8/s400/IMG_3199.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
I really enjoyed the time I spent visiting each display. As I scanned each QR code, I learned more about the activists featured at the museum. Many of the people were ones I'd heard of before, but I got to learn new things as I listened to the students' work. It was an interesting museum for both the adults and students who had the opportunity to visit it.<br />
<br />
As the Literacy with ICT Teacher Leader for our school division, I noticed that students had used many important skills in developing their project. A few important <a href="https://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/tech/lict/teachers/show_me/continuum.html" target="_blank">LwICT skills </a>that I saw evidence of were:<br />
<br />
<b>Gather & Make Sense:</b> students conducted research to gather information on their activist, they organized that information and made sense of it in order to create their posters and recordings<br />
<br />
<b>Produce to Show Understanding: </b> students created their posters, audio recordings and their display to demonstrate their understanding of the person they researched<br />
<br />
<b>Communicate: </b> students communicated their ideas to an audience of museum visitors with this project. They developed an engaging museum exhibit that used various components to share knowledge with others.<br />
<br />
I know that students also used their ELA skills in their research, writing and recording and demonstrated an understanding of their Social Studies outcomes through this project. It was awesome to see student learning showcased in this unique project! <br />

This is the first time we've used MinecraftEDU for a classroom project, so I was curious to see what students had to say about their experience.<br />

Mr. Obach's class designed civilizations using Minecraft EDU to demonstrate their learning. They were asked to address w<span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">ork & trade, architecture, food sources, sustainability and natural environment in their designs. Students were also expected to explain how the environment impacts the civilization.</span></span><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When I was learning to use Minecraft EDU in my training sessions this fall, I was pretty slow at building and sometimes frustrated when I couldn't quite get things to work. I failed often. I was certainly no expert in building with Minecraft. However, I could see the awesome potential for students to design and create with Minecraft. I also really liked the Education Edition add-ons such as the camera, book & quill to make it easy for students to document their learning. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When I met with the Grade 8 class, some of them had previous experience with Minecraft and some did not. We introduced Minecraft EDU and gave students a bit of time to try it out. I was impressed with how quickly and easily all students learned the tool and got right to creating their designs. When I visited the Grade 8s again, they were efficiently collaborating with a partner in a "shared world" to build different elements of their civilizations. When I asked those students who hadn't used Minecraft about their experience, they told me that they'd found it was easy to get started and fun for them, even though they'd had to figure out a new tool. </div>

I was blown away! They had created incredibly detailed and thoughtful projects. They explained reasons for creating their civilizations in certain ways and told me about various elements they'd included. Here are a few pictures of what I got to see that day:</div>

To see previous releases, check out <a href="http://mrsobachsclass.blogspot.com/2019/12/book-trailers-built-with-powtoon.html" target="_blank">this post</a>.<br />
<br />
Once students have their trailer ready in Powtoon, we've been watching them in small groups to give feedback based on the criteria we set at the start of the project. Students then have the opportunity to make revisions before exporting their video. Here are the latest trailers from this talented group of young video producers!<br />
