Math Game: Four's a Winner

We learned a new math game today in Grade 1 and everyone is bringing it home tonight to play!  Have fun :)

Humpty Dumpty

We read the play Hey Diddle, Diddle by Deb Lougheed and we liked her idea, so we wrote our own nursery rhyme play.  Please leave a comment to tell us what you think! 

Narrator:
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again

Then the king came running out of the palace.

King:
Yikes! It's a cracked egg!

Humpty Dumpty:
I'm laying on the ground, can't you help me?

King's men:
How did you fall off the wall?

Humpty Dumpty:
Somebody pushed me off and he looked like a bad egg.

Narrator:
The king's men took their horses back to the castle and took all of their equipment off. After everyone was gone, a fairy appeared.

Fairy:
I can fix you up Humpty!

Narrator:
The fairy made a wand appear and she said the magic words to put Humpty back together. Then she took out her cell phone to call a friend.

Fairy:
Princess Sophie, will you take care of Humpty Dumpty please? A bad egg pushed him off the wall and he landed and cracked. We thought he was good egg, but he is a bad egg. The police eggs took that bad egg to the egg jail, but now we need someone to stay with Humpty.

Princess:
Oh my! I need to come help you! I'll be there soon! Bye.

Narrator:
The princess came so the fairy could leave. The princess took very good care of Humpty and he got better.

One day, the king came to check on Humpty Dumpty.

King:
Wow, you're looking better! Would you like to come down and have some breakfast?

Polar Bear Adoption: SEVEN polar bears!

Students have been working hard on their polar bear adoption cookie fundraiser and their hard work paid off on Friday when they were able to adopt SEVEN polar bears.  Way to go Grade 1s!!

Remembrance Day

Before we attended the Remembrance Day service at the high school this morning, we read about animals involved in war on this website.  It was really interesting to find out how animals helped during the wars.  Students summarized their learning by Tweeting facts about each animal - check out @MrsObachsClass at twitter.com

16 students, 4 volunteers and 47 dozen cookies later!

What a busy day!  We started making cookies for the polar bear adoption fundraiser today with the help of some wonderful parents and community members.  Students worked in teams to mix, bake, bag and deliver cookies.  Students even took the great photographs below.  I saw lots of learning today as students worked together: reading recipes, measuring ingredients, counting cookies and excellent cooperation. Together we made 47 dozen cookies this afternoon!  We were very lucky to have such strong support – thank you to our volunteers for their partnership!

Grocery Shopping

We went to the co-op this week to buy groceries for our cookie fundraiser.  This is the grocery list that students made after reading many recipes and deciding on the best recipes to make.  Students did a great job of working together at the grocery store and they carried lots of heavy bags of groceries back to the school!  Way to go Grade 1s.
